An award winning partnership

South East Local Land Services was recently recognised for its collaboration with the NSW South Coast oyster industry to develop and adopt best management practices to improve industry sustainability and profitability.

The South East Local Land Services Oyster Industry Partnership Program has taken out the NSW Government's 2014 Green Globe Public Sector Sustainability Award and the 2014 Annual NSW Coastal Management Award for Innovation.

Senior Lands Services Officer Adam Gietzelt said over the past ten years staff from the former Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority and South East Local Land Services have worked with the industry and its partners to develop and implement environmental management systems (EMS).

"In 2013 a significant milestone was achieved with the launch of the last three EMS," Mr Gietzelt said.

"Growers from all eight major oyster producing estuaries now operate more sustainably under a formal EMS, making the South Coast one of the most sustainable oyster producing regions in Australia.

"Many partners have contributed to the success of the program including Australia's Oyster Coast, Sapphire Coast Wilderness Oysters, Oceanwatch Australia, researchers, State and local government agencies, educational organisations, community groups and rural landholders."

Sue McIntyre, a Pambula Lake oyster grower and member of Australia's Oyster Coast and Sapphire Coast Wilderness Oysters, said South East Land Services provides terrific support for growers and the entire south coast oyster industry.

"The partnership program has helped improve our farming practices and the health of our estuaries.

"It also provides strong support to grow our two major regional brands and bodies on the South Coast, which many growers belong to and use to market their product."

Both award ceremonies were attended by The Hon. Robert Stokes MP, Minister for the Environment.
