Key steps to successful weaning

A series of beef information days will be held across the region in February and beef producers are invited to attend. Industry consultant Jeff House, of Jeff House Livestock, will be talking to producers about some of the key aspects around weaning, with field days scheduled at:
- Crookwell – 14 February
- Braidwood – 15 February
- Nimmitabel – 16 February
- Boorowa – 17 February
While weaning may appear to be a fairly simple task, Matt Lieschke (Livestock Officer with South East Local Land Services) says a number of things need to be considered to ensure the best outcome possible. “Concerns around weaning generally include when to wean, what method to use, how long to wean for, what supplements to use and at what rate. This will all be covered on the day”.
Successful weaning is all about implementing a strategy that minimises stress and any potential setbacks to calf growth. “Weaning affects whole-farm profitability in a number of ways, so it’s important to have a good program in place. At each farm we will be having a close look at the weaning method used, type of infrastructure, animal health treatments and nutritional management. This will include a paddock walk to look at the type of feed weaners are likely to be grazing and the level of supplementation needed to achieve growth targets” said Mr Lieschke.
Over the years Mr House has worked with beef producers in areas of breeding, genetic selection, cattle assessment, nutrition and meat quality.
“Last year we ran a number of field days with Jeff and the feedback was extremely positive, so it’s great to have him back again,” said Mr Lieschke.
