South East Local Board meets at Bombala

The South East Local Board met at Bombala last week to discuss the organisation's service delivery areas of productive agriculture, biosecurity, natural resource management and emergency management.

Board members Stuart Burge, Ian Denney, Ken Garner, Barry Gay, Mac Wilson and Chris Shannon, Chair David Mitchell, General Manager Gavin Whiteley and South East Local Land Services senior staff met at the Heritage Guest House.

Now 11 months into Local Land Services, the South East Local Board is focussed on achieving improved customer service standards, effective governance and decision making based on a strong understanding of local land management issues, and on merging state Local Land Services strategy with the existing south east strategy.

Chair David Mitchell said the Board is also finalising the structure for the establishment of Community Advisory Groups.

"These groups will have a valuable role in providing advice to the Board on how South East Local Land Services can work with communities to deliver locally relevant services," Mr Mitchell said.

"Local Land Services will have three major partners in its delivery of services – local government, Landcare and industry. The meeting at Bombala provided an ideal opportunity for the South East Local Board to catch up with local partners Bombala Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Bob Stewart, Deputy Mayor and Chair of Monaro Weeds Committee Brad Yelds, Monaro Farming Systems Chair Oliver Cay and Snowy River Interstate Landcare Committee Chair Robert Belcher.

"The South East Local Board and these representatives discussed what is working well and what can be done to improve and build on these existing partnerships.

"Each provided their thoughts and experiences about South East Local Land Service's role in local land management issues, existing and future funding for projects and community support and engagement.

"One area identified as requiring particular attention was management of weeds on Travelling Stock Reserves.

"The concerns that were raised will be used to inform south east strategy and implementation plans."
