Small Farms Network – Milton Rocks project wins Community Blue Star Award

The Small Farms Network - Milton Rocks project, delivered in partnership with the Croobyar Road Farming Group, recently won the Community Environmental Achievement Award at the Keep NSW Beautiful Blue Star Awards ceremony at Gloucester.

The Small Farms Network provides advice, facilitates workshops and delivers sustainable agricultural and biodiversity projects on farms. It has been supporting small landholders along the South Coast since 2004 and has over 600 members on its database.

The Milton Rocks project coordinated by Project Officer Julie Holstegge and South East Local Land Services' Small Farms Coordinator, Andrew Britton, is based within the Croobyar Road catchment.

Mr Britton said it began in 2010 in response to weed and pasture management issues.

"Over 25 landholders have been involved in the project which has held workshops on soil, fertiliser and weed management, feral animal control and biodiversity of farm," Mr Britton said.

Since 2010 over 10 kilometres of vegetation corridors and 11,000 tubestock have been planted, with 8,000 winter active dung beetles released and 34 soil tests and fertiliser management plans completed.

"This is great recognition for the wonderful work our landholders have achieved since 2010. Driving along Croobyar Road, you can see the corridors beginning to make a visual impact across the landscape," Mr Britton said.

The Milton Rocks project was recently been awarded an additional $78,000 from the NSW Environmental Trust to protect a further 3 kilometres and plant 5,000 tubestock across the Croobyar Road catchment over the next three years.

The project will include wildlife identification training and monitoring. A number of motion cameras will be installed within native vegetation and riparian corridors to identify what fauna exists on farms.
