Yass LLS partners with community to tackle pests

The Yass Local Land Services team are encouraging local land managers to come along to one of the upcoming vertebrate pesticide training sessions in Yass, Sutton or Boorowa to learn how they can help tackle pest animals in the region.

Funded largely by annual rates from customers, the biosecurity team is available to provide support and advice to land managers to help them meet their General Biosecurity Duty obligations.

Pest animals including foxes, rabbits, feral pigs and wild dogs pose a significant threat to the health and sustainability of the environment, agriculture and the communities they support, so managing them should be a priority for everyone.

“We already have a committed group involved in our Feral Fighters program,” said Yass LLS local manager Sari Glover.

“But we know that pest control works better the more people we have involved.”

The Feral Fighters program, which started as a partnership with Gunning District Landcare, is a group control program which now has over 2,000 members across the South East. Funded by the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, Feral Fighters brings local communities and neighbours together for coordinated and targeted campaigns at key times of the year, like autumn and spring.

Training and a limited supply of baits are provided free of charge to members of the Feral Fighters program.

“Managing pest animals is not just something for producers, we need all rural land managers to be aware that they have a responsibility to manage pests on their properties, and that LLS is here to help them.” Sari said.

Training sessions for land managers whose accreditation has expired, or for land managers who do not yet have accreditation, are planned for:

  • 12 February Sutton
  • 13 February Boorowa
  • 19 February Yass
  • 20 February Boorowa
